X Games Real Series

First things first, X Games Real Series just got a little bigger with surf now being apart of it. But lets not stray from what we are looking forward to. The line up for the 2013 Real Street has been released, and lets just say this is going to be a good one. With heavy hitters such as Louif, Brisse and Frank April blessing the selection this year, we have no clue who will be taking the top spot. Check the back soon for where you can vote!

Hike Park Is Out of Commission

Hike Park is shutting down due to an unprecedented weather trend, Spring time.  Thanks to everyone who came out this weekend and packed the base area with technical rail/jump moves.

While the true season may be shut down, we're planning an end of season rager for the next coming weeks, so we should be able to all get out there again and hit some features.  Always check back here for updates on what we're doing before everyone goes to Hood or South America... or at least start Mountain Biking or skateboarding.

Hike Park Edit

Turning this footage around quickly.  A few of us working types got out to the hike park yesterday evening (one up that daylight savings time) and filmed on the down bar.  This is what spring riding is all about.  Get it while you can.

Jacket around the waist = Casual.

Lifts are out, hiking is in.

If you've been keeping on the snow report, you'll see that the lifts aren't running for the remainder of the season.  This shouldn't actually effect your attitude towards snowboarding being hiking is the best way to get down to business.  Lifts are for wimps.

Hours & Pricing

Monday - Friday: 3PM until dark
Saturday & Sunday: 11AM - 5PM
Season passes or tickets ($15) are required

Flour City Edit from Industry Day at South

Flour City Distribution, the Mid-Atlantic  home of Capita, Union, Coal, ThirtyTwo, Ashbury, Howl, and Poler hooked us up with this edit from Industry Day earlier this week.

Some of this stuff is fire.  Switch back three on flat was a personal favorite.  Haven't seen an instrumental rap song used in 'boarding since the mid 90s.  Great vibe, park looks on point.

We're running the lift tomorrow so come bring the cam out and clock those edits.

Fast Laps IV

Everyone loves web content.

Nick put it down with another installment of Fast Laps.

Using a 2Chainz song is pretty unprecedented in snowboarding.  Rap has gotten to a level of ignorance that other genres can only dream of achieving.  Being most hip-hop snowboard edits employ the musical styling of Lil' Wayne or anyone on MMG, this edit certainly ups the ante.
2Chainz will always have a home in fueling the ironic side of New York skateboard academia, but bringing it into snowboarding?  Nick's a real game changer with this one.

K2 Pretty in Pink Girls Only Edit

Nick Dakota put together this edit of the K2 Pretty in Pink Jam.  Girls were throwing down left and right, completely not scared.

The course was basic, but dialed.  Flat box, up rail, down GP box and down rail.  Putting out more basic features really show cases girls who have certain tricks dialed.  While the flat box and up rail got a good amount of play, the competition was all about that down bar/down GP box combination.  Frontboards, front 1's on, and lipslide stalefish's reminiscent of Jonas Michilot were all attempted.  Some were stomped, some were bailed on, and at the end of the day Lauren Longfield took home the win for charging lipslides and front 180s on.  Contest veteran Elise Fugowski took home second with signature front board/back lip style.  Brie Pepe, charging a frontboard through the down bar, took third rounding out a season of exclusive top three finishes.

There was a small, but solid group of younger junior girls giving the features a-go.  Julia Norman took first with lipslides across multiple features, K2 regional ripper Alexa Cerra took home second, and Genie Lavanant took home the bronze.

Glad to see this jam is back on the hill!

GoPro Video Lab Update

It's pretty apparent GoPro Cameras are going to be seen on hill for years to come.  They're small, lightweight, and HD.  The only draw back to having all that footage is not having access to quality editing programs.  For that, Mountain Creek has you covered.  Whether you rent or buy a camera from the Showroom or bring your own, you'll be able to enjoy all the fine accouterments of Final Cut Pro.  Final Cut costs something like 900 U.S. dollars, so you all better get in there and start editing.

After editing, tag Mountain Creek on Facebook.  If your edit makes the cut, we'll run it on the park blog, prop it out on the Facebook, or maybe even send it to all those shred sides you guys check everyday.

Check this video below Maria and Nick made explaining the ins and outs of the GoPro Video Lab.

Brighton Fridays Gang Swing Through the East Coast

The Brighton Fridays Crew came through Mountain Creek on a down home East Coast tour earlier this winter.   Sumner, Jack, Sam, and Dave came from all over the US, and now reside in Salt Lake City.  Zach Wright grew up in New Jersey, but moved to Salt Lake a couple years ago.  His older brother and park crew legend Matt Wright came up on some clips in this as well.  He recently moved back to New Jersey from Salt Lake, and rumor has it he is now moving yet again.  Proper edit by some proper dudes.

Brighton Fridays: East Coast Adventure from Earth Tone Media on Vimeo.

Spring Time Boardin'

Apparently, before we started going to the hill, it was way colder in New Jersey than any place else in the world. Like blizzard of '96 type things were happening all the time.  Now that our East Coast home has settled into a fairly mild winter this season, Spring Boardin' can begin a week earlier than usual.  Spring riding is the best kind of riding.  The most people come out, you don't need to wear a bunch of pesky outerwear that takes up room in your car, and trying increasingly harder tricks gets increasingly easier.  Imagine snowboarding in 55 degree weather everyday?  It'd probably be a lot like skateboarding or surfing, ie. way too difficult.  The hardest part about snowboarding is getting over the fact that your favorite activity exists when most people would just go inside.

East Mag's 5 Things to Bring Boardin' -  A great reference for Spring Shredding.

ThirtyTwo Demo was FIRE all day.  Kids were trying boots, Capita Boards, and Union Bindings.  Look at that Sunday blue sky. Next weekend is more of this, better come take advantage.

This kid was ripping the Twisted Kids session.  Proper front board to regular.  Kids need to learn those non-Zeached tricks early.   Ski and Ride School are a great resource to make sure your tricks are proper.

Us here at Park Blog HQ are always super reluctant to refer to rails in a terrain park, which are never designated to be used by hand, as "hand rails."  Hand rails require stairs underneath and have a minimum rise of 24 inches.  A rail like this is called a down bar, a park rail, or just a rail.  Attaching the prefix "hand" to the word rail gives this feature a false sense of urbanity.  This weekend, however, we were forced to revisit our rail vocabulary as a well known ex-girl shredder actually used the park rail as a hand rail while it was closed for maintenance.
Also, what's up with the phrase "hitting urban."  Shouldn't it be "hitting suburban."  It's too hard to park and set up a drop-in in actual urban areas.

Pretty In Pink/Weekend Hike Park Set Up

You heard it here first, The Arena has a down rail again!  As the cornerstone of any good hike park, a low(ish) down rail of decent steepness, is the undisputed best feature in the world.  As events and parks take more and more cues from skateparks/street snowboarding, this is the feature that started it all.  This is the closest thing any of us will ever be to actually skateboarding on snow, and that's why it's almost relieving to have one back in the hike park, even if it is the end of February.
There's also a down round bar going in for tomorrow, so be on the lookout for the advanced feature.

JibLab kills it.  Always has, always will.

We really couldn't be more excited to shred this thing tomorrow.

RedBull Buttercup Recap

This weekend put the RedBull Buttercup 2012 to rest.  The Arena was packed with spectators looking to see some wood and p-tex flexed beyond comprehension.  The advent of reverse camber snowboards has certainly raised the bar for this jam.  Competitors are no longer allowed to simply lean in the direction of what used to be defined as a press.  We're calling for serious base graphic recognition in each photo these days.

Grom winner Miles putting down a facemasked front lip.  This kid's the future.

This photo was the exception to the rule.  Matt noseblunting from flat isn't a butter, but it's so nice it doesn't even require a color photograph.   This is why he took home the gold.

Girls Week At Mountain Creek

This week is book ended with two great jams for girls only.  Tonight we have our standing Girls Only Shred Sessions at South.  Great way to come on out and rip around the mountain and try some new tricks.  Last week had an unprecedented number of girls show up, so tonight should only get bigger.
We're also proud to announce the K2 Pretty In Pink Rail Jam.  This time the girls and guys at K2 outdid themselves.  There will be a K2 product demo on snow followed by a rail jam.  All the girls can come out and try the new women's stuff (including 2013 gear!) K2 offers and then follow it up with a friendly competition. There will be specials in Kink on Magic Hat afterwards, so we've got you covered both on and off snow.  If that's not enough, Pretty in Pink is a Boarding for Breast Cancer Event so come show your support for a great cause!

Pat Moore Interview

Pat Moore a great dude.  He holds it down huge contests, he represents the East Coast, and has been putting out quality footage since the days of the Grenade/Soldiers of the Frozen Battlefield videos.  His sponsor list is as impressive as his riding: Forum, Foursquare, Red Bull, Electric, Volcom, Eastern Boarder, Crab Grab, and Ass Industries.  His X Games Real Street part this year had some of the most insane spots involving close out rails, roofs, massive quantities of snow, etc.  He's a humble dude who's backed by the right people and is clearly out there progressing snowboarding because he loves it.  Our resort reporter Maria had a chance to ask him some questions while he was hanging around Union Square, fulfilling his sponsorship requirements to remain relevant in New York nightlife without falling off.  We don't care what anyone says, the hardest task about being a professional snowboarder is retaining nightlife relevance.

Original Skateboards Crew Lapping South

In the off season, take a nice drive around scenic Sussex County.  You'll probably notice there are an awful lot of hills 'round these parts,  many of which are suitable for the fine sport of downhill skateboarding.  The crew over at Original have been perfecting their many sizes and shapes of skateboards and longboards in order to dial in that perfect asphalt decent.  It just so happens that when the temperatures drop, the Original staff like to strap on the old knuckle dragger snow surfer or two planks and do a little cross training.

Mountain Creek is proud to be the home mountain for the Original Skateboards team and employees.  United in our shared love of sliding sideways down mountains.

RedBull ButterCup Coming Satudray

If you've driven/ridden by the Arena lately, you'll notice the RedBull Buttercup butter boxes are in place.  Not only is this contest focused on fun, its course is super user friendly.  With the advent of reverse camber technology, this contest has every reason to be going off!  Press your pickle, jibstick, flatkick, v-rockered science project through the RedBull lexan.  Get out there and have some fun, NXTZ, Oakley, Neff, Nike, Forum, RedBull didn't come all this way for nothing.  JibLab put it together on this super-collaboration, so don't let them down.  It's also going to be beautiful out tomorrow, like spring beautiful, so get some wild thrift store gear (Hawaiian shirts, jumpsuits, dresses, "Number One Boss" tees) and throw down.

Freshies, Man. Freshies.

If you live in or around the Vernon area, you're probably taking note of the snow falling.  You're probably also saying something like, "I thought this was supposed to be rain."  You may or may not have checked the forecast, and noticed that according to the internet, a source more reliable than your own perceptions, it's apparently raining.  I can say with stern confidence that it is in fact snowing.  It's snowing relatively hard as well.  It may not be sticking to the ground as of yet, but it's definitely sticking to the other snow that's on the mountain right now.  It may be mid-February, but winter isn't over.
Below is a short art film titled "Uh.. Yeah, It's Snowing."  It's a commentary on the despondence of youth within snowboard culture, so much so that even when a cultural participant's ultimate wish is granted, the young must still give off an air of indifference.  The film has no clear subject, yet the viewer can hear a male voice in the background performing his necessary role as an individual who is not easily impressed.  These contemporary snowboarders have an ability to act independent of worldly weather patterns so much so that they are unmoved by snow currently falling.  Here, we are reminded of great existentialist thinker Soren Kierkegaard.  These youth feel as if the snow falls in the context of their own destiny, not the destiny of inevitable weather patterns.

Nah, we're kidding, see ya out there, fools.

RedBull ButterCup/New Rails

Getcha' Roll On.

Just in time for the epic spring conditions out there, (it's like 44 degrees out) some newer favorites hit the hill.  The double barrel down rail replaced the down flat down single barrel, and the Quebec Ledge replaced the vacant lot between the C and the double barrel.

The Quebec Ledge holds a special place in many of our hearts.  It's conception was brought about by some of the most dedicated park and JibLab staff, who, coincidentally, are all members of MENSA.  By combining "real spot" recognition before real spot recognition was even a thing with on hill subtlety, the Quebec Ledge is able to stand the test of time.  Unlike the real ledge on Rue d'Youville, Quebec, Canada, this one is made out of nice metal and lexan, so you can do whatever you want.

Bozwreck Representation at Creek

Walking around North, not one, but two Bozwreck decks were spotted.  The owners of these boards are unknown, but what is known is that Mountain Creek is one of the only mountains you will ever see two OG Bozwreck decks leaned up outside of a multi-million dollar lodge.  Can't fault anyone for giving into the cultural disparity between supporting anything Nate Bozung and Matty Ryan do, and enjoying a pint at the beautiful Schuss Bar.

Saturday Night Video Post

It's 10pm on a Saturday, and we're all logged in.  If you're reading this right now, you're missing the foam party at Kink, so discontinue this particular internet endeavor and head over there.  It has foam and members of the opposite gender.  If that isn't the makings of a good time, the answer to what is certainly will not be found here.  It's also almost mid February.  This is the time when one chooses to either begin taking days off from the hill, making good on promises to friends and loved ones that they'll be around this winter, or shows complete disregard to a standard social life and continues slashing.  Valentines Day's are forgotten, girlfriends and boyfriends are pissed, employers begin questioning an employees' commitment, rent checks go unwritten, etc. etc.  The following edit dropped on our good friend's East Snowboard Mag's Site, and it's a good one.
Bistro is putting it down both on the board and blog.  Consistent and informed updates, a hectic travel schedule, and more street cred than you can shake a stick at.  Plus he knows the ol' back 270 to fakie, a trick that confuses the lift line peanut gallery so much that they often chose to neglect it's existence.
